one of the most annoying things about living in indonesia is the fact that as a bule, i am part of an extremely small minority. this entitles indonesians to treat you like a spectacle, which becomes tiresome very quickly! One thing that re-enforces being treated like "a spectacle" is to allow Indonesians to use depreciating terms when speaking to you, or about you. The term for white (skinned) humans is Caucasian. Indonesians' current, favorite vilification - "bule" - shouldn't be used. Except in movies when used for effect, when do you ever hear a Black person refer to himself as a "nigger", or an Italian a "spic"? How long do you think an Indonesian would last in, say, New York or Los Angeles if s/he called a Black person a "nigger"? If the word doesn't have negative connotations, why don't those INA government functionaries returning home from overseas trips who speak on TV, call foreigners who give this country money and assistance, "bules"? Some Whites think you can buy favor for yourself by going along with the apparent joke when you allow someone to call you, or you call yourself, a bule. It might appear that you're doing a good job of currying favor, but you can't hear the internal snickering among Indonesians in your circle who are listening and watching you. They're laughing because the joke is on you! So just keep it up. Keep calling yourself the equivalent of a "white nigger" and then wonder why Indonesians think of you as a "spectacle" - a moving road show. It's because you are. Yawn - flingers my old "cewet" - you crap on relentlessly about this ; you have certainly failed the "Learning Indonesian - a guide for silly old farts" module on culture.

Just let's forget the politically correct for an instant shall we ?
First of all, the Wikipedia entry is jolly wrong on the prononciation - Boolay, not Blay, long U sir - and it insists on the fact that some foreigners don't like it, which is kind of weird, since, for instance, I and some people I know hate being called "tourist", but the word don't get banned.
Sticking to the fact, or maybe I'm blind, but a lot of expat I see here are richer than average, and have a behavior blatantly different from the native's. Isn't it, thus, kind of normal to get a word designating this majority ?
Something else, bule seems to actually come from "albino" allright, I asked several people, and read several articles, that seem to be it.
Also, historically speaking, if we compare other terms like "nigger" or "jackie" or whatever, what we see is a majority of higher status (either at the time enslaving or invading) or social status (toward poorer immigrants) giving hate names to a minority. Here in Indonesia, what's happening is the complete opposite, since, as I said, a vast majority of the expat minority seems to be much wealthier than the average indonesian joe.
And as I always say :
"The days thing will be better will come when you'll be able to say 'a black lesbian dwarf' without anybody being bothered - even if you don't see a black lesbian dwarf everyday..."

Exactly, which is why the whole Bule thing isn't worth getting het up about. As I say I've been called far worse. Perhaps someone would like to call me something now? Any creative suggestions? Scum sucking son of a chicken sexer, etc.?

Exactly... I mean... why worrying about it ? It's what we are. As long as I don't hear "Dasar bule" or "Bule brengsek" or "Nasklain Tamune" I don't see why I should worry.
The things that bothers me, on the other hand, it the fact that we are often mistaken for walking wallets, perverts and so on. But again, this reputation didn't come alone, so instead of pouting and cursing in silence, better if we explain the whys and hows... I see you've been to Jaksa Oh yeah, and to a lot of other places... That's really a pain in the ass with time. What I hate the most is being asked for my clothes "I like you cap, give it to me".

Heh. Yeah, the constant demands for cash are a bit tiresome but when they ask for your clothes it's too much. "Nice shirt Mr. Can I have it?" "Ah. You want the very shirt off my back do you? I'm actually in the process of wearing it mate, sorry"

I'm actually in the process of wearing it mate, sorry" The worst that happened was in Nias. I can't say that's really the local's culture more than the bad habit of some big NGO's workers to blatantly spend stupendous amounts of cash at the face of these poor guys who have not much, but there, nearly everybody was asking me for something I was wearing. I'd have said yes every time, from the morning to the evening i'd have been naked in a day. The "I'm wearing it" answer didn't even work all the time. I remember a guy asking for my cap EVERY SINGLE TIME we met. And If you answer "no", you're "pelit". Fortunately only few people here are like that.

I was wondering if anyone would bring that inccident up. They're good guys, they're just a bit wayward at the moment. As for their 'slut girlfriends' I can also assume you don't know then personally or you wouldn't say that. You see, they're all my friends.

This might sound trivial or not, but it involves one well known JakChat contributer. What exactly happened in Romance last Sunday? My sources tell me the following: the said JakChat contributer commited another social blunder by mentioning to a patron that his girlfriend is a known slut and has even bedded with him recently. Well a cool head prevailed, at first. Now I don't speak for all, but that would just about send me into a rage, to put it lightly. Things really heated up when the JakChat-er wouldn't shut his mouth and continued on to his next target, Jimmy Duncan. If any of you know him after a Sat. night booze fest, he can be about as charming as a wolverine. Well to make a long story short, fists started flying and a rumble ensued which then spilled outside. My comment is this. If this is true, it's just one more reason to muzzle this JakChat-er if he has been known to have already consumed more than his share. Nuff said. So you want to take people to task for fighting and acting like an arse until they are friends of yours. Then it's okay because "they're just a bit wayward at the moment"???? I know bugger all about either situation or the people involved but surely if you are going to muzzle one you have to muzzle them all.

If by "A bit wayward" he means enraging the local street mafia until they break bottles over their heads, getting taken away in a police car, returning later covered in plasters to be taunted for getting cut up a treat by one of the two skankiest, meanest hoes it's ever been my misfortune to meet in this country, and generally ruining everyone's evening then yes, I guess that's a fair assessment.

Good hearts? Well I don't know about that but they should watch themselves. You can get killed in this country - it's happened before to Bules. Plus ruining it for everyone else with such boorish behaviour and souring relations between locals and expats is not to be applauded.

Bogan-mania. Just lads causing a ruckus at Absolute who then hot footed it down to Romance to escape potential slice and diceage by Absolute's bouncers.

Said "good-hearted" Kiwi chap seems, in a rare and fleeting moment of intelligence when he realized that they were not "cool" to display but rather reinforced his moron-status, to have removed the photos of himself battered, bruised and bandaged (as mentioned above) from facebook site.
